How to become a citizen of the Republic of Armenia
The procedure for acquisition of citizenship of the Republic of Armenia has undergone certain changes since the adoption of the law on dual citizenship in Armenia.
Before, applicants were required to have knowledge of the RA Constitution, a medical document, a certificate verifying that the applicant had not been sentenced and more.
Today, those who can speak in Armenian, are of Armenian origin and have Armenian ancestors can apply for RA citizenship.
Applicants must submit the following documents:
-Appeal to the RA President
-CV (in the form of the embassy)
-Birth certificate and passport with copies
-Six 35x45mm photos
-Document verifying Armenian origin (baptism document)
The applicant will receive a passport of the Republic of Armenia after the appeal is ratified (within a year). Before, passports were granted within 30 days. Now, there is a limited time, meaning that the applicant decides when he or she receives the passport after the appeal is ratified.
The legal division of the RA Ministry of Diaspora informed tert.am that in 2011, 14,276 Armenians had applied for RA citizenship and most of the applicants were from Georgia (7,021 citizens), followed by Syria (2,983), Lebanon (2,014), Russia (965) and Iran (489).
