Opening of “Armenia” Square in Chile
As the RA MFA press service reports, on January 29, the “Armenia" square was opened and a cross-stone from Armenia was placed in Puerto Williams, which is considered the most southern point on the American continent in Chile. It was Argentinean-Armenian businessman, President of Corporacion America Eduardo Ernekian who came up with the idea of donating an Armenian cross-stone to Puerto Williams.
Among the participants were Eduardo Ernekian, Armenian Ambassador to Argentina and Chile Vladimir Karmirshalyan and RA Honorary Consul in Chile Eduardo Rodriguez Guarach. Among the participants from the Chilean side were acting Governor of the Chilean state of Antarctica Fabiola Torres Peralta, Deputy Commander of the Marine Base of Chile in Puerto Williams, Deputy Admiral Umberto Ramirez Navarro, members of the state legislature and local media representatives.
Among the speakers were businessman Eduardo Ernekian, RA Ambassador Vladimir Karmirshalyan and Deputy Admiral Umberto Ramirez Navarro.
Then, Eduardo Ernekian, Ambassador Vladimir Karmirshalyan and Honorary Consul Eduardo Rodriguez Guarrach, accompanied by Deputy Admiral Umberto Ramirez Navarro, visited the Horn Cape, which is the most southern island of the archipelago located 75 miles away from Puerto Williams and where the waters of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans intersect.
During its round-the-world navigation in February 2011, the Armenia Ship visited Horn Cape. The ship's crew donated an Armenian cross-stone to the cathedral located on the Cape. Eduardo Ernekian, the Armenian Ambassador and the Honorary Consul placed a plaque next to the Armenian cross-stone on which the following is written in five languages, including Armenian, Spanish, English, Russian and Hebrew: "This Armenian cross-stone is dedicated to the brilliant memory of the innocent victims of our planet. It was brought to Horn Cape by the crew of the Armenia Ship on 8 January 2011.”
We mention that nearly 5,000 tourists visit Horn Cape every year, and their main sites of interest are the lighthouse located on the Cape, the cathedral and the statue of the albatross.
